Adventure stories often center on a timeless conflict. Heroes strive to do what is right while villains are willing to sacrifice anything to achieve their ambitions. Noble hearts and ruthless opportunists pursue the same treasures, but the paths they choose define who they become.
In X: Seekers of Fortune, that conflict is not just part of the story. It is part of the gameplay. Through the Noble vs. Ruthless mechanic, players are constantly asked a simple but meaningful question.
Will you advance your own cause, or hinder your rival’s?
Character Conflict Meets Strategy
Every competitive game asks players to determine the best path to victory.
Should you focus on developing your own position and compounding every advantage you can create? Or should you spend resources disrupting your rival long enough to seize the lead?
Many relics in X: Seekers of Fortune ask players to answer that question the moment they enter play by choosing one of two modes: Noble or Ruthless.
Personal Advantage vs. Rival Disadvantage
Choosing Noble directs a relic’s power toward strengthening your own position. Choosing Ruthless turns that same power against your rival.
Sometimes this choice reflects personality. Some players naturally prefer building their own engine, while others enjoy throwing obstacles in their opponent’s path.
Competitive players, however, should view the decision through a different lens.
Which option gives me the highest chance to win this game?
Playing the Percentages
A useful rule of thumb is to ask a simple question.
Which side of this relic still has the most value left to generate?
Take Merchant Scale, for example. It can either increase the number of Leads you draw whenever you collect rewards or reduce the number of Leads your rival draws when they do.
If you’re behind on completed Adventures, you’ll likely collect more rewards before the game ends, making Noble the stronger long-term investment. If you’re ahead, your rival has more Adventures remaining, increasing the value of the Ruthless option by denying them more Leads over the rest of the game.
Not every relic is this straightforward. Activated abilities and static effects often require a broader evaluation of the game state.
Let’s examine a few examples.
Jewel of the Mirror Pool
Jewel of the Mirror Pool manipulates active Adventures and is currently the only relic whose Noble and Ruthless modes each grant activated abilities.
Its flexibility becomes especially powerful during the Final Adventure, where controlling Adventure selection can decide the game.
Noble - Leverage: Scrap up to two ACTIVE ADVENTURES. Reveal one for each scrapped.
Ruthless - Leverage: Bury up to two rival-controlled ACTIVE ADVENTURES. They reveal one for each buried.
The Noble mode improves your own Adventure selection, helping you avoid undesirable reveals during the Final Adventure while increasing the odds of finding Adventures that fit your current Leads.
One notable drawback is an opposing Digger’s Dugout, which converts your scrapped Adventures into material for your rival. Fortunately, this interaction is easy to anticipate and often avoid.
The Ruthless mode attacks your rival’s Adventure selection instead. It can force unwanted reveals during the Final Adventure, deny valuable three-cost Adventures, and create opportunities for devastating five-cost Adventure disruptions. Because it buries rather than scraps Adventures, it also avoids fueling Digger’s Dugout while pairing exceptionally well with Rival’s Dig Site, allowing informed players to strategically reduce their rival’s odds of completing Adventures.
If your game plan is proactive and focused on completing Adventures as efficiently as possible, Noble is usually the stronger choice. If your strategy revolves around disrupting your rival’s tempo and limiting their options, Ruthless becomes an exceptionally powerful tool.
SEAL OF THE ERI KAI
Seal of the Eri Kai offers asymmetrical Heroic Feat support through two powerful static abilities.
Noble - Once per turn, you may perform a HEROIC FEAT an additional time.
Ruthless - Rivals must discard a LEAD to perform each HEROIC FEAT after the first
The Noble mode dramatically expands your own turn potential. Whether doubling Negotiate to replenish your hand or chaining multiple Breakthroughs to finish the game, the additional Heroic Feat can generate explosive turns.
The Ruthless mode attacks one of your rival’s most valuable resources: efficiency. Extra Heroic Feats suddenly require additional Leads, making long Heroic Feat chains and extended Thwart battles much harder to sustain.
In many games, Ruthless will provide the broader strategic value because Heroic Feats are fundamental to high-level play. That does not mean it is always correct.
When you’re behind or looking to convert one explosive turn into victory, Noble may be exactly the boost you need.
When deciding between the two, ask yourself:
Will I win faster by gaining more resources, or by making my rival’s resources less effective?
GUARDIAN STAVE
Guardian Stave can hasten your path to the alternative Breakthrough win condition, or block your Rival’s path to it.
As a quick reminder, a Breakthrough win can be achieved when a player successfully peforms the Breakthrough Heroic Feat while in the Final Adventure with seven ActionX cards between their Active and Archive Zones.
Noble - Whenever a rival ARCHIVES an ACTIONX card, you may discard two LEADS. If you do, draw an ACTIONX card.
Ruthless - Whenever you archive an ACTIONX card, bury an ACTIONX card in a rival’s ARCHIVE. Draw a LEAD.
The Noble mode helps assemble the seven archived ActionX cards needed for a Breakthrough victory, rewarding you whenever your rival advances their own ActionX game plan.
The Ruthless mode simultaneously attacks opposing Breakthrough strategies while generating steady Lead advantage.
Because you control when your own ActionX cards are archived, you also control when Guardian Stave triggers, making it a reliable source of value throughout the game, especially during the Final Adventure when every Lead matters.
If you’re pursuing a Breakthrough victory yourself, Noble is often the correct choice. If your rival is threatening one, or if neither player is particularly close, Ruthless usually provides more immediate value by disrupting their progress while fueling your own.
Show Them Who You Are
Whether your decisions are guided by careful strategy or by instinct, every choice between Noble and Ruthless shapes the story unfolding across the table.
Sometimes the best play is to build yourself up. Sometimes it is to tear your rival down.
The challenge is recognizing which path offers the greater advantage in the game you’re playing, be it Noble or Ruthless.
In the end, every fortune seeker must decide not only how they will win, but who they will become in pursuit of victory.
